The World Health Organisation lists Disease X (the name for a currently unknown pathogen that could cause a future epidemic) as a very serious threat to human health. To prepare for Disease X, we are building a pipeline to rapidly identify, and test nanobodies, for detecting and potentially treating future viral diseases. We are targeting current viral pathogens to test and exemplify our approach and, to date, have generated nanobodies to recent variants of SARS-CoV- that have shown therapeutic potential in animal models of COVID-19 (Cornish et al 2024 https://doi.org/10.1098/rsob.230252).
