Research environment

At the Franklin, our interdisciplinary teams address long-term health challenges and have access to global expertise, cutting-edge technology and world-class infrastructure. The Franklin embraces a ‘team science’ approach to working with our researchers understanding that expertise from many different disciplines is required to create these innovative new technologies and solve these pressing challenges.

Life at Harwell

The Franklin is part of a vibrant ecosystem of more than 200 organisations. The Campus is home to a number of national facilities, such as Diamond Light Source, Central Laser Facility and Nucleic Acid Therapy Accelerator (NATA), in addition to private enterprise of all sizes from start-ups to leading companies, such as Oxford Nanopore and Moderna.

With the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside as our backdrop, there is a thriving campus community with regular social and networking opportunities. There are numerous social clubs to join from the football to yoga to table tennis.

There are also plenty of places on the Campus to grab food or a drink, from the numerous cafes to DiSH at Harwell, which not only offers an array of tasty food options but also organises regular music events, games nights and outdoor cinema.

South Oxfordshire is among the highest rating counties for quality of life in the UK. Harwell provides delightful balance with the peaceful countryside life of Oxfordshire and the bustle of nearby Oxford, so there is something for everyone.

Frequent public transport links make getting to major hubs of London, Birmingham and Bristol easy, from these hubs onwards journeys around the UK and abroad are simple.
