Jack’s project involves investigating the structure of the Bacillus subtilis spore coat utilising EM imaging techniques including STEM tomography.
Jack did both his undergraduate BSc and postgraduate MSc(Res) degrees at the University of St Andrews. During his master’s project, Jack worked on investigating and validating pharmacological chaperones against N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase, an enzyme involved in the final step of the cascade of heparan sulfate degradation which, when dysfunctional, is implicated in a disease called mucopolysaccharidosis IIID (Sanfilippo Syndrome D). He has experience in structural biology but is excited to broaden his horizons and learn about the interdisciplinary approach at the Franklin to address biological questions.
